Harriette Van Spall, MD

Dr. Van Spall is a cardiologist and clinical trialist with expertise in heart failure, data science, and implementation science. She leads both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored trials.  She is a recent recipient of the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research/Canadian Cardiovascular Society Mid-Career Lecturer Award in Cardiovascular Sciences and the American Heart Associated Nanette Wenger Research Goes Red Award, among other international research awards. She has presented her work at
late breaking clinical trial sessions at major international conferences; and has published research in high-impact medical journals, including JAMA, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, European Heart Journal, Circulation, and JACC.


Dr. Van Spall is engaged internationally as an invited speaker and media correspondent, a peer reviewer at federal grant agencies, an editorial board member at a few high-impact journals, and a member or Chair of dozens of international research networks and/or guideline committees. A champion of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the research enterprise, she has a strong record of mentorship to several international trainees, who have successfully won grant funding and published in top medical journals under her supervision.

Dr. Van Spall obtained Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Toronto, where she completed her residency and clinical fellowship programs. With a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health and a clinical research fellowship at McMaster University, she is an Associate Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, Canada and Director of Implementation Science at Baim Institute for Clinical Research.
